G. Penzo: Smooth Bent Billiard (Flame) (A)
Product Number: 002-782-0055
The warm, striated, chestnut-and-ruby tones of cumberland is arguably one of the most aesthetically pleasing palettes within pipe making — I mean, Dunhill has an entire series named from the special vulcanite. I'm particularly fascinated by how artisan's choose to incorporate the material into the color palette of their pipes; sometimes it acts as a contrasting motif, while other times it initiates and defines the piece's presentation. Italian carver Giacomo Penzo opted for the latter in this bold bent Billiard rendition — the stummel's stain offering a contrast that beautifully echoes the stem's variegated hues. Were it not for the change in grain orientation between stem and stummel, one could easily mistake the pipe for being one complete piece, the color palette is so consistent. The shape, then, is equally attractive. It offers a muscular bowl that dominates the visual profile, while the supple flow of the transition and serpentine sinuosity of the shank and stem add elegance to the composition.-Truett Smith
