G. Penzo: Smooth '309' Bent Billiard with Boxwood (Flame) (A) Tobacco Pipe

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, and that goes double for the pipe making world: The classic shape chart, invented by 19th century factories has remained a staple throughout the industry for over 150 years (and I see no sign of its influence diminishing). There are certain rendition of classic shapes, however, that are clearly recognizable as the work of a singular maker. Peterson of Dublin has a number of such defining designs, with the now-discontinued "309" bent Billiard being one of them. Here, Italian artisan Giacomo Penzo honors the esteemed Irish firm with this version of the iconic "309."

This rendition is made all the more special by Giacomo having moved to Ireland in 2019 to now work as Peterson's Pipe Specialist, consulting the Irish marque in all stages of their pipe making process — elevating generations-old processes by refining equipment and continuously seeking opportunities for improvement. This Peterson-inspired pipe is marked by an especially tubular bowl (a signature Peterson design cue), the heel is particularly defined, with the bowl's fore perfectly upright. Merely copying the shape, however, wouldn't be much of an homage, so Penzo has added his own artistry to his version. Most notably, the shank is slightly less robust than Peterson's original iteration, lending this piece a sleeker disposition. Furthermore, Peterson's System design typically features a metal military mount, and Penzo opted for one of boxwood — a tasteful substitution, compositionally, as the pale hue of the accent beautifully complements the lighter hues of the stummel's contrast stain. It's an impressive feat to incorporate subtle changes to such a well-known shape, while still maintaining the design's defining characteristics, and Giacomo has towed that line expertly here.
