G. Penzo: Smoooth Lovat Tobacco Pipe

The traditional Lovat is a Billiard variant defined by an elongated shank and abbreviated saddle stem. The overall length of a standard Billiard is maintained, but the shank-to-stem ratio favors the shank. Such shaping offers a touch more briar than usual and shifts the negative space created by the saddle stem. This rendition from Giacomo Penzo is fairly classic in it's characteristics; however, the Italian artisan has playfully altered the proportions and size. Under five inches in length, it's a compact Nosewarmer but one that doesn't lack in regard to muscularity and substance — the shank broad and expansive to rival the visual weight of the bowl and lend the form an attractively chubby aesthetic. To elevate that shaping, Penzo applied a stain of dramatic contrast to the stummel, highlighting an exceptional array of vertical grain across the flanks of the bowl that continue through the shank.
