G. Penzo: Rusticated Devil Anse with Boxwood Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-782-0068
The Devil Anse is a specific rendition of the Belge shape, taking the Belge's forward-canted, Egg-like bowl but fitting it to a considerably abbreviated shank-and-stem combination. The traditional Belge is an old shape, dating to when clay reigned supreme as a pipe-making material, but the Devil Anse is a newer design, at least in popularity, having garnered attention and appeal after Kevin Costner's character, "Devil" Anse Hatfield, smoked the design in the History Channel's Hatfields & McCoys TV miniseries. Since the show's release, a number of makers have put their own spin on the Nosewarmer, with Giacomo Penzo presenting his take in this piece. Under four and a half inches in total length, this is an exceptionally compact version, easily slipping into a pocket and offering extremely light weight for clenching ease. Fittingly, it wears a extra-rugged rustication, creating a gnarly, cratered texture that will suit everyday smoking and pocket-carry. The finish will hide any handling marks this pipe might accrue over years of use, and it's handsomely accented by a ring of boxwood, matching the stain's lighter hues.
