G. Penzo: Smooth Tomato (Flame) (A) Tobacco Pipe

This Tomato from Giacomo Penzo draws some inspiration from the Danish school of pipe making, most notably in the soft curves and sweeping contours that make up the broad, squat bowl. The transition shows some severe cheeking as well, which visually reinforces the heft of the bowl and lends it some independence within the composition. The shank and stem make a straight line from the transition and provide a sense of balance to the design that can be felt immediately in hand, though visually, the bowl's bulbous form certainly draws the eye faster. At less than five inches in total length, this piece seems tailor made for on-the-go smoking and easy pocket-carry, and it's delightfully presented in a warm, orange-hued smooth finish, which showcases fine strands of flame grain across the flanks of the bowl.
