Grechukhin Design: Sandblasted Bent Apple
Product Number: 002-808-0007
Representing an insane value in the world of pipes, Grechukhin Designs are all handmade from start to finish. From the overall shaping, performed by Vladimir himself, to the contrast sandblasts, executed by Alexander Tupitsyn, every detail in these briars is realized by hand through artisanal methods. Even the mouthpieces and tenons are hand-cut from rod stock. What's more, Vladimir doesn't work from models to create these designs; he shapes them all individually, meaning no two Grechukhin Designs are quite alike.
Here in this bent Apple, we find a stocky, chubby form reminiscent of Grechukhin's work a few years ago. The plump, spherical bowl works effortlessly with the tight-knit, well-defined transition, producing full cheeks to either flank. A subtle lift to the shank, combined with the slight downward turn to the saddle bit, creates a graceful S-curve that balances the extra visual weight of the bowl — all while maintaining modest, compact proportions overall. It's finished here in a gorgeous sandblast, with a hint of contrast to its underlying stain, resulting in a striking display of both concentric ring grain and smoldering flame alike.- Andrew Wike
