Grechukhin Design: Smooth Lumberman with Zebrano
Product Number: 002-808-0048
Given Grechukhin Design's usual output of lithely bent and conveniently compact designs, it's quite rare to see a straight, somewhat lengthier pipe emerge from the Russian workshop. The visual balance of this Lumberman is spot-on, with the subtly tapered bowl naturally and consistently rounded and the elongated, oval shank poised arrow straight out back for an incredibly sleek profile. The briar's cross-cut pattern is wonderfully illuminated by the glossy, walnut contrast stain fellow carver Alexander Tupitsyn applied to the stummel, with birdseye positioned along the flanks that's separated by streaks of cross grain along the near and far sides. Like all of the workshop's pieces, the vulcanite mouthpiece is hand-cut and reflects the meticulous care paid to the lip button and slot. Whether you appreciate expertly engineered renditions of traditional forms or have been waiting for a more classically inclined and minimalist piece designed by Grechukhin, this may be the perfect opportunity to add a such a piece to your pipe rack.- Jeffery Sitts
