Grechukhin: Sandblasted Bent Apple with Olivewood
Product Number: 002-497-0035
Long, broad-flanked, thin-sectioned shanks don't strike me as a particularly easy design element to pull off (certainly they leave a lot less room for error, or readjusting a shape should natural flaws hidden in the briar be exposed), but Vladimir Grechukhin has nonetheless, or perhaps precisely because of that, made them one of his specialties. Here he presents us with a particularly long example, following the bowl in a smooth, architectural arc, resulting in an effect of the shank appearing like a flying buttress running between the bowl and the stem's olivewood accent. And then there's the finish, of course, which as you can see is simply stunning - a fantastic, crisp ring grain, combined with a bold contrast stain that allows hints of the underlying flame to be exposed as well.
