Grechukhin: Smooth Blowfish with Polymerized Organics (G65)
Product Number: 002-497-0106
In September of this year, Vladimir Grechukhin marked his 65th birthday by producing seven special briars bearing a "G65" stamp, a variation on his usual "G" stamp reserved for those pieces he takes particular pride in. Of those seven briars we have been fortunate enough to receive two: one symmetrical in design, and one asymmetrical.
Here we find the asymmetrical of the two, in what has become the archetype of asymmetrical design: the Blowfish shape. Though recently we've begun seeing long-shanked Blowfish designs from Vladimir, here he returns to his more familiar, stocky, strongly knit proportions. That said, otherwise this design does part ways considerably, compared to past Grechukhin Blowfish that we've received. Firstly, in profile, in place of the spherical, modified Apple or Tomato bowls of his past renditions this Blowfish presents a more lobe or leaf-shaped style, accompanied by lower-profile flanks and a broader cross-grain panel. Secondly, it is, readily, the most overtly asymmetrical Blowfish Vladimir has sent our way, the cross-section showing off a powerful leftward curve, countered only by the long, gentle swell of the right-side panel and the rather quick, sharp flicking gesture of its rear edge.
