Grechukhin: Smooth Bent Apple with Bone
Product Number: 002-497-0108
Vladimir Grechukhin is simply a master when it comes to lending even the most compact of designs a strong sense of implied movement and dynamism. In this bent Apple for example, we find a form that measures only four and a half inches in length, yet possesses such a strong sense of momentum in its curling, cresting wave-like lines that it appears to be traveling forward at great speed. The smooth, arcing line of the underside flows seamlessly through the softly rounded rim, coming to a crest along the aft. The depth of the transition works to accentuate that sense of arcing movement — all in a configuration that can be easily balanced in the jaw or stowed away quickly in a jacket pocket.
As impressive as the design may be, Grechukhin's lent the same meticulous attention to grain orientation in this piece as well, with windswept flame erupting swiftly from the base, following those cresting lines in pure synchronization. His warm contrast brings further definition to these fiery strokes of grain and pairs tastefully with Vladimir's unique bone accent situated along the end of the shank. A beautiful piece, and a great example of Grechukhin's undeniable talent and skill with briar.
