Grechukhin: Smooth Twisted Bent Brandy with Black Palm (G)
Product Number: 002-497-0109
Stout and stocky, fairly compact and tight-knit in style, this bent Brandy is an excellent example of the kind of powerful stance Vladimir often lends his more muscular numbers — balancing a whole lot of substance with intricate line-work and a touch of asymmetry. The bowl itself appears elongated horizontally, extending the fore and aft out to their respective faces. Paired with the swift, upward sweeping lines of the shank, this elongation really works to give the form a lot of forward momentum and implied motion in profile. It still remains quite comfortable in hand, however, with a slight inward bevel below the lipped rim along the left flank offering a groove of sorts for the fingers to slide into when gripped.
That asymmetry actually serves another purpose apart from comfort and shape aesthetics: it allows the shape to fully follow the flow of the grain itself. This feat is perhaps most obvious when viewed from the front, where you'll notice the form of the bowl actually emulating the swept motion of the flame, running parallel to the lines of the form proper. Considering both the complexity of the shape and the perfect orientation of the grain, it should come to no surprise to find Vladimir's prestigious "G" stamp dressing this briar. A beautiful piece.
