Grechukhin: Smooth Bent Egg
Product Number: 002-497-0178
Vladimir Grechukhin's style often combines compactness with robust, muscular proportions with this bent Egg being readily recognizable as the Russian master's work and reflecting both of those characteristics. The bowl is affably plump and exhibits a strong degree of forward cant, with the subtle ridgelines along the top and bottom of the shank meeting the bowl with precision. Those ridgelines create prominent cheeking around the transition with the bottom ridgeline accentuating the bowl's lifted heel, both elements hinting at the Danish influence often seen within Vladimir's portfolio.
Along with the precise shaping and pocket-friendly length, one of my favorite aspects about this piece is the grain orientation. Grechukhin's ability to maximize the briar's grain potential is undeniably impressive, and the Russian master presents an exquisite array of grain on this piece. Streaks of cross grain adorn the bowl's bulging flanks, framing seas of swirling birdseye fore and aft. For a subtle accenting touch, Vladimir chamfered the innermost portion of the rim, allowing the skillful shaping and gorgeous grain to garner the attention it deserves.- Jeffery Sitts
