Grechukhin: Smooth Volcano
Product Number: 002-497-0179
Vladimir Grechukhin's aesthetic doesn't carefully tread the high-wire between power and grace as much as it bounces playfully up and down on said metaphorical tightrope. Coupled with that, the carver may play with a shaping style for a period of time, only to tire of it and move on to something else of interest. That being said, this is seemingly the second Volcano iteration we've encountered from the carver, and it's quite a stretch from the previous one.
Though both this piece and its predecessor share Vladimir's penchant for implied momentum, this one seems to evoke the fluid motion of something like a jet ski rather than the steam engine-like profile of the former. There's a tight sweeping motion at the underside, culminating in a bulbous display of birdseye at the heel, sharply divided by the proud licks of flame emanating from the base on all flanks. The feel in hand is supremely ergonomic, offering a number of comfortable configurations for the fingers, and Vladimir's stemwork is, as always, excellent. I'm quite fond of this pipe.- Daniel Bumgardner
