Grechukhin: Sandblasted Bent Dublin (Collaboration with J. Alan) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-497-0190
In profile, this collaboration piece from Grechukhin and J. Alan seems to somewhat hint at the former's influence, with a silhouette I'd more closely associate with the latter carver. Viewed from the smoker's perspective, however, as well as from above, and evidence of the Russian master's hand is brought neatly into focus. First, the rim is unmistakably teardrop shaped, implying a forward-ebbing sort of geometry I'd more closely associate with Vladimir. The upper curve of the transition from bowl to shank, with its rearward-sweeping gesture, serves to bolster this impression, as does the lower curve from the far side of the rim to the stem.
And while the shaping is something of a handsome fusion of the two carvers' styles, the finish is a bit easier to lock down, being a type of contrast sandblast we've seen Grechukhin play with quite a bit. It accentuates concentric circles of growth rings climbing the bowl, leading effortlessly to blasted birdseye at the rim and underside. I'd be remiss if I failed to point out the stem work as well, as the saddle wears an asymmetrical base, which is also something we've seen Grechukhin implement in a number of pieces over the years. With its asymmetrical shank face, stepping down to the saddle stem configuration, it's a perfect complement to the overall design. This is a truly spectacular piece, but should we expect any less from Grechukhin and J. Alan?
