Grechukhin: Smooth Bent Pot
Product Number: 002-497-0218
Though many elements of Vladimir Grechukhin's style merit attention, one of my favorite aspects about the Russian master's work is his deft ability to combine seemingly disparate aesthetics in such a highly effective, seamless manner. Here, Grechukhin makes excellent use of a crisply triangular shank, juxtaposing the firm ridgelines at play with a plump sense of shaping up front. Such a design amplifies the bowl's muscularity and makes it the primary focal point of the entire composition. The shank's ridgelines meet the bowl with absolute precision, creating prominent cheeking near the transition and offering some subtle textural diversity when cradled in hand. Upon closer inspection, the grain orientation certainly impacted the way in which Grechukhin approached shaping this particular briar block. Above the ridgelines, lively streaks of vertical grain dance around the chubby bowl and sides of the shank, while below, seas of swirling birdseye dominate the entire underside of the stummel. The rim is gently rounded to contrast against the firm lines of shank and maintains the Danish aesthetic that's often prevalent within the Russian artisan's work. Vladimir has notably opted to forgo any sort of accenting material on this piece, allowing the superb shaping and meticulous line work to take center stage.- Jeffery Sitts
