Grechukhin: Smooth Bent Apple
Product Number: 002-497-0220
A wonderful rendition of the bent Apple, this offering from Vladimir shows off the Russian carver's style and expert craftsmanship. It's quite a compact piece, yet houses bold and muscular proportions. The shank meets the bowl in a tight, high-set transition, making for an almost chubby profile and matching well with the bowl's extremely rotund nature. It's amazing, then, how Vladimir has also imbued the piece with an inherent organicism. The rounded rim and matching shank-end lend a softness to the imposing muscularity of the bowl and broad shank, and the pinched shank, flared shank-end, and natural plateau on the shank's underside offer an organic aesthetic. Such organic design aspects seem almost at odds with the piece's heft and proportions, but Vladimir has blended the two seamlessly and beautifully, dressing it all in an understated, mahogany contrast stain.-Truett Smith
