Grechukhin: Sandblasted Morta Blowfish with Sandbasted Bamboo
Product Number: 002-497-0225
Vladimir Grechukhin is not the first pipemaker to experiment with a combination of the jet-black texture of morta and the uniquely affable shape and color of bamboo, but his use of the two materials is certainly among the most impressive I've encountered. For starters, Grechukhin isn't content to go the route previously traveled by carvers when it comes to morta, forgoing an inherently simplistic form in favor of a shape of undeniably organic complexity: the classic Blowfish.
"Classic" here is a relative term of course, as the readily recognizable patterns of birdseye so commonly framed by the shape-chart standard are supplanted for a cross-thatched pattern dressing the left and right flanks, the tight topography of the stuff's texture on clearest display at the bowl's central ridge. Paired to an undulating stretch of bamboo at the shank extension, the likes of which have been lightly sandblasted to coax out a bit of striated texture, this inherently playful, lightweight organic number from the venerable Russian carver is sure to be a treasured companion.- Daniel Bumgardner
