Grechukhin: Smooth Apple with Sandblasted Morta
Product Number: 002-497-0235
Dual-finished pipes seem to be inherently impressive and intriguing, in terms of both their texture and visual impact, but when one's rendered from two different mediums like this Grechukhin Apple, the results are simply stunning. Pairing a smooth briar bowl with a sandblasted morta shank extension is something we've seen only a few times before from the Russian master, but each time we receive one, they demand attention. On this example, the smooth bowl is simultaneously petite and chubby, its rounded heel drooping below the transition. The grain orientation follows the bowl's shaping expertly with flame grain cascading down the flanks while whorls of birdseye dominate the base.
What immediately drew me to this piece was the morta shank extension and all of the brilliant contrast it offers on this piece. From its sandblasted finish, unique grain patterns, and jet-black color, there's much to appreciate about the inherent duality it creates in this composition. A firm ridgeline emerges from the left side of the teardrop shank, offering some additional crispness to the shank's texture and blends in seamlessly with the bowl's shaping. The disc-shaped base of the vulcanite stem provides some negative space in profile, drawing further focus to the morta. This piece demonstrates Grechukhin immense talent and will undoubtedly provide years of visual and tactile pleasure.- Jeffery Sitts
