Grechukhin: Partially Sandblasted Bent Apple with Ivorite
Product Number: 002-497-0236
This style of bent Apple is readily recognizable as the work of Russian master Vladimir Grechukhin and is reminiscent of a design we've previously received in its shaping and compact proportions. Though this one is just shy of nosewarmer status, it's still relatively abbreviated compared to Vladimir's more overtly muscular and hearty designs. Not only does this piece highlight Grechukhin's dynamic shaping style, it brilliantly showcases his expert use of dual finishes. Shape-wise, the bowl is pleasantly plump, effortlessly filling the palm with its substantial size and displaying a great deal of cheeking around the transition. Just as visually striking as the bowl is the dramatically flaring, abbreviated shank with the domed base of the downturned stem complementing the supple curves of the bowl and the rounded shank face. Firm ridgelines traverse the length of the shank's underside, coming to a point along the bowl's base, further accentuating the bowl's chubbiness. In terms of finish, the Russian artisan has treated the stummel to a remarkably craggy sandblast, unveiling waves of ripping ring grain that climb the bowl before meeting the smooth chamfered rim. A pearly white band of ivorite adorns the stem base, standing out in stark contrast against the stummel's dark, earthy brown stain. A fabulous piece that truly demonstrates Grechukhin's immense talent.- Jeffery Sitts
