Grechukhin: Smooth Long Shank Bent Egg with Ivorite
Product Number: 002-497-0241
Riffing off of the long-shanked, organic designs that originated out of early artisan pipemaking in Denmark, Vladimir Grechukhin here presents a lengthy bent Egg. Like those aforementioned Danish pieces, the shank flares toward the stem, slightly pinched at the flanks to accentuate the profile's streamlined appeal. The bowl, however, exudes the muscularity and hearty proportions often seen in the Russian master's work. It's substantial in hand and pleasantly rounded, conforming well to wrapped fingers, while the rim is topped with natural plateau and the defined transition emphasizes the form's plumpness. Meanwhile, the stem is abbreviated and downturned to balance out the shank's upward curl, and the expansion ring at the base offers just the right amount visual interruption in the profile's lines. Contrasting the contrast stain of the stummel is an ivorite accent at the shank end, but instead of shaped to a ring, Grechukhin fitted it perfectly flush to the briar before doming it gently at the face, guiding the eye into the diminutive negative space between stummel and stem.-Truett Smith
