Grechukhin: Smooth Bent Pot with Mammoth Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-497-0242
Similar to a previous bent Pot we received from Vladimir Grechukhin, this example favors stout, robust proportions, but in a slightly more compact arrangement. One aspect of the Russian artisan's work that never ceases to amaze me is how he's able to pack so much powerful substance into such a small canvas. It's certainly exemplified here as is Grechukhin's penchant for plump, Danish-esque forms and supple curves, taking those classic shaping cues and ramping them up. The hearty, forwarding urging bowl of this particular piece displays some thoroughly Danish-style cheeking around the transition, further accentuated by the pinched sides of the shank. The high-kicking, softly downturned saddle stem was also a smart touch, putting the focus on the briar itself and all of the superb shaping on display. One of Vladimir's gorgeous contrast stains highlights streaks of straight grain all around the chubby bowl, while the stem base is accented by mammoth, providing just enough intriguing diversity when it comes to visual texture. Simply an exquisite example of the Russian master's ability to craft a pocketable pipe with no shortage of muscularity and beautiful grain.- Jeffery Sitts
