Grechukhin: Smooth Bent Billiard with Mammoth
Product Number: 002-497-0244
A stunning example of sublime shaping, gorgeous finishing, and perfect proportions, this bent Billiard from Vladimir Grechukhin is easily recognized as the work of the Russian master. The St. Petersburg-based artisan rarely fashions a classic Billiard, catering most often toward Brandy and Egg-like variants. While this piece does have a noticeable taper toward the rim, it still falls squarely into the traditional Billiard category. The proportions here are vintage Grechukhin — the bowl plumply-based and slightly rounded for a natural in hand feel, while the shank and transition echo said muscularity. Said shank, though, features crisp ridgelines along the top and lower flanks, a stylistic cue not often utilized by Vladimir compared to his more common, vertically-pinched shanks or those with more softly rounded ridgelines. The firm lines contrast against the bowl's curvature, adding some rigidity to the form while seamlessly following the elegant S-curve of the downturned stem and upward-flicking shank. The precisely balanced shaping is matched, then, by expert internal engineering and trim bit work, and the finish leaves nothing to be desired: A warm, ruby-tinged contrast stain brings out the best of concise straight grain all around the stummel, while the mammoth accent at the stem base provides intriguing diversity in terms of color palette and visual texture.-Truett Smith
