Grechukhin: Partially Sandblasted Long Shank Bent Egg
Product Number: 002-497-0245
Long-shanked renditions of the Blowfish and Apple shapes have become a sort of signature of Vladimir Grechukhin over recent years. The generously elongated shank is a striking aesthetic, popularized by Lars Ivarsson, and one that gives the bowl an obvious, perched-like orientation, especially when the shank tapers toward the transition as Vladimir has done here. In this piece, though, the Russian carver has gone a step further to separate bowl from shank: Firstly, the contrast between the shank's smooth, walnut contrast stain and the Egg bowl's dark sandblast separates them both visually and texturally; and secondly, the crisp ridgeline and sudden chamfer before the transition make it seem as though the bowl and shank were rendered from separate blocks and then fused together. It's a piece defined by an inherent sense of dichotomy, making for a disparate color palette, texture, and silhouette, yet at the same time, Vladimir ensures that the piece stays coherent — the lines of the shank continuing into the plump bowl and the smooth finish of the shank echoed at the innermost, chamfered section of the rim. Adding to his growing portfolio of long-shanked renditions, this bent Egg is a stunning example of Grechukhin's execution of fine craftsmanship and shaping, all in a surprisingly lightweight form and testifying to the Russian's place among the premier artisans in the business.-Truett Smith
