Grechukhin: Sandblasted Rhodesian with Ivorite
Product Number: 002-497-0255
With the numerous iterations of this Rhodesian that Vladimir Grechukhin has carved, I'm always amazed at how the Russian artisan manages to make each one uniquely distinct and individualistic. The general form itself plays with the basic Rhodesian shape but incorporates a playful sense of asymmetry between the bowl's waistline and the rim. Whether Vladimir opts for beadlines or a firm ridge, as seen here, the aesthetic is always the same — the rim remains parallel with the horizontal axis, while the waistline cants dramatically forward, altering the expecting proportions and relation between the bowl's fore and aft lines. In this particular rendition, the Russian master has paired said asymmetrical bowl with a shank that's triangular of cross section, blurring the lines between round-shanked Rhodesian and diamond-shanked Bulldog. It's kept reserved, though, the panels softly rounded to ensure the visual focus remains drawn to the crisp line around the bowl. Accented with a creamy piece of ivorite, the color palette is marked by rich shades of rust red and burnt orange, highlighting one of Grechukhin's signature sandblasts.-Truett Smith
