Grechukhin: Sandblasted Strawberry Wood Magnum Acorn (S)
Product Number: 002-497-0257
Long, Ivarsson-esque of shank, with a sandblast that highlights the unusual nature of the growth rings in this block of briar, this piece from Vladimir Grechukhin provides loads of visual interest with its tapering curves, scalloped rim and shank end, and bold color. We've not seen many Acorns from Vladimir; as far as I can tell, this is the third we've had, and it's by far the largest. The transition is subtle but maintains bowl cheeking, and the heel protrudes just enough to maintain the Acorn shape. In conjunction with the long, tapering shank, which expands toward the mouthpiece, it appears solid and resolute. The only smooth area is the nomenclature panel at the bottom of the shank; the rim and shank end are both sandblasted. this sandblast is fun to examine, too: On the shank, the growth rings are wide, and they vary dramatically in width all over the bowl. However, the blast is deep, and all of those growth rings work to unify the composition in a naturalistic presentation of skill and nature.- Chuck Stanion
