Grechukhin: Sandblasted Long Shank Bent Apple with Mammoth
Product Number: 002-497-0262
When crafting long-shanked pieces Vladimir Grechukhin often favors fashioning the Blowfish, Apple, and Tomato in such lengthy proportions. It's become somewhat of a signature within Vladimir's portfolio in recent years and hearkens back to the types of pieces the legendary Lars Ivarsson popularized. I find myself particularly drawn to Grechukhin's Apple variants and this example may be the most irresistible one yet. Aesthetically, it's quite the striking design with the plump bowl sitting perched at the end of a shank that dramatically tapers as it works its way from its flaring end to the slightly pinched transition. A trio of subtle ridgelines noticeably emanate from out of the shank face and dissolve effortlessly into the bowl's shaping, further accentuating the bowl's chubbiness. Matching the impressive shaping cues of this piece is the rugged sandblast Vladimir utilized here. It's one of the craggiest I've seen from Grechukhin, showcasing a plethora of rippling ring grain around the bowl's surface. The rim has been left smooth for some subtle contrast, stained a warm auburn tone while the base of the stem features a creamy, multi-hued mammoth accent. And despite the length of this piece, it remains surprisingly lightweight and proves why Grechukhin's work is highly respected.- Jeffery Sitts
