Grechukhin: Sandblasted Bulldog with Ivorite
Product Number: 002-497-0263
Typically, Vladimir Grechukhin's Bulldog renditions display a unique asymmetry in their bowl shaping — the form canted forward, yet the rim poised upright and not parallel to the waistline's dual beadlines. Such cues are creative additions to the timeless form, but we rarely see a traditional variation from the Russian master, making this piece more of a standout within Vladimir's portfolio, despite it being a more standard interpretation of the Bulldog shape. Most notably the rim follows the bowl's slight cant, positioned parallel to the beadlines, continuing the hard lines of the diamond shank. Compared to classic English and French versions, this piece displays the plump roundness we're used to seeing from Grechukhin, the bowl more rounded above and below the beadlines as opposed to being neatly tapered. It makes for a more Apple-like silhouette, and offers a substantial presence in hand, Vladimir's commanding use of muscularity on full display through the stummel. Forgoing his usual, more vibrant contrast sandblast, this piece wears a dark chocolate stain with a more subtle color contrast, drawing visual focus to the trim accent of ivorite at the shank end.-Truett Smith
