Grechukhin: Smooth Cavalier Sitter Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-497-0265
A highly stylized and creative Cavalier design, this piece from Vladimir Grechukhin is a striking interpretation of the traditional shape. It isn't a fully functioning Cavalier — the airway not continuing through the extended shank for moisture draining — but the aesthetic of the form is well-maintained, and the flattened foot permits this design to sit unassisted. I'm particularly fascinated by the shank's continuous arc, with the shank-end curling nearly past the bowl and offering the necessary balance that enables this piece to sit stably. The firm, protruding ridgeline at the foot is echoed by the shank-end's sloping orientation, while the offset expansion disc of the saddle stem perfectly mirrors the shaping of the shank face. From the sweeping shank rises an irresistibly plump and affably round bowl, somehow shaped in a way that allows for dramatic cheeking at the lower flanks and maximizes the lively flame grain that dances across its surface. It's a magnificent design full of whimsy and creativity, perfectly demonstrating why Grechukhin is considered a master of the craft.
