Grechukhin: Sandblasted Brown Bulldog
Product Number: 002-497-0273
Barely over four inches in total length and with a Group 1-sized chamber, this Bulldog from Vladimir Grechukhin epitomizes the term "pocket pipe" and is perfect for quick, on-the-go smoking sessions when convenience and a light weight are prioritized but artistry and craftsmanship can't be compromised. The aesthetic is immediately recognized as that of the Russian artisan; his personal shaping style has become so iconic and influential that it's become known as the "St. Petersburg" style — named for the location of Grechukhin's workshop — with a number of fellow Russian carvers learning from Grechukhin and putting their own spin on his aesthetic. Said style of the St. Petersburg tradition is often marked by compact yet hearty proportions as exhibited by this straight Bulldog. However, this is a much more traditional take on the classic shape than what Vladimir usually carves, forgoing the asymmetry we're used to seeing from the Russian artisan's Bulldog designs. It does wear his signature contrast-stained sandblast, though, and is the perfect choice for someone interested in a travel-friendly briar of classic style fashioned by one of the most esteemed and influential makers in the world.-Truett Smith
