Grechukhin: Sandblasted Lovat with Mammoth
Product Number: 002-497-0274
Two aspects in particular of this pipe give evidence as to who made it: its proportions and its finish. Both the shaping and finishing style are quintessential cues of Vladimir Grechukhin, even if the Lovat shape is not one often rendered by the revered Russian artisan. Grechukhin's personal shaping aesthetic often prioritizes compact forms of muscular proportions, and as such, this Lovat, while of Nosewarmer length, remains substantial and generous, always making its presence known in hand yet with a lightweight comfort when clenched. It offers the best of both worlds — charming plumpness and convenient size — with the added benefit of a respectable chamber, around that of a Group 4. Dressing this classic design, then, is a rippling sandblast that's been contrast stained for visual texture over top the stummel's tactile appeal. This combination is also a signature of Grechukhin's, and it adds further dimension to the combination as the vertical streaks of contrasting colors intersected the raised layers of ring grain cascading down the bowl. Furthermore, the stem base is accented by a mammoth accent, throwing its own unique visual texture into the collage for endless hours of analysis and aesthetic appreciation.-Truett Smith
