Grechukhin: Smooth Lumberman
Product Number: 002-497-0276
Compared to his usual output of deeply bent and conveniently compact designs, it's quite rare to see a straight, lengthy pipe emerge from Vladimir Grechukhin's workshop. It's been a few years since we last saw a Lumberman rendition from the Russian artisan, and this interpretation may just be his most reserved and traditional to date. The shaping and visual balance of this piece are spot-on, with the bowl naturally and consistently rounded and the elongated, oval shank poised arrow straight out back for an incredibly sleek profile. The briar's cross-cut pattern is wonderfully illuminated by the glossy, walnut contrast stain Grechukhin applied to the stummel, with birdseye positioned along the flanks that's separated by streaks of cross grain along the near and far sides. Vladimir's meticulously crafted mouthpieces are heralded for their comfort, and the carefully shaped saddle bit on this piece is no different. Whether you appreciate expertly engineered renditions of traditional forms or have been waiting for a more classically inclined and minimalist piece from Grechukhin, this may be the perfect opportunity to add a such a piece to your pipe rack.- Jeffery Sitts
