Grechukhin: Smooth Bent Apple with Silver
Product Number: 002-497-0278
Recognizable at first glance as the work of Vladimir Grechukhin, this bent Apple demonstrates the muscularity and tight-knit, compact shaping that dominates the Russian carver's portfolio. The bowl is plump and tapered for a comfortable in-hand feel, and is wide in girth to accommodate its broad tobacco chamber. The shank curls upward from a tight transition to meet an elegant accent of sterling silver at the shank end, whence emerges the saddle stem, its own base comprised of a softly domed aspect before reducing to the profile's slender character and subtle downturn.
While the proportions are substantial, the profile projects a flowing momentum through the bent stem, curled transition, and upright bowl, contrasting against the substantial gravitational impact of the stummel. It's little wonder that so many young artisans have sought Grechukhin's advice and learned in his workshop. Grechukhin is a masterful craftsman who utilizes top-notch engineering and finishing techniques, and here that skill is displayed by contrast staining that highlights the vertically rising flame grain around the bowl. It's a compact yet robust pipe, its minimalist lines and creative shaping providing a smoking instrument to elevate any collection.- Chuck Stanion
