Grechukhin: Smooth Bent Apple
Product Number: 002-497-0279
While bent Apples often find their way into the portfolio of Vladimir Grechukhin, they never repeat previous iterations, each achieving independence of shape and proportion. This rendition provides a more moderately proportioned form than often seen made by the Russian carver, forgoing compact muscularity in favor of a long and lithely bent character.
It's still a solid pipe, though, especially through the horizontally wide oval shaping of the shank. Visual dominance of the stummel is maintained through the negative space of the saddle stem, which is appropriate given the superior quality of the briar highlighted by Vladimir's contrast staining technique. Tongues of flame grain rise up the flanks to the softly inflated rim, while birdseye characterizes the upper and lower shank, heel, and rim. A classic shape given invigorating new appeal, this is a pipe that not only stages Russian craftsmanship but the unique vision of Vladimir Grechukhin.- Chuck Stanion
