Grechukhin: Sandblasted Bent Apple
Product Number: 002-497-0281
This bent Apple from Vladimir Grechukhin is a wonderful example of the Russian artisan's signature shaping style, combining a strong degree of muscularity with pocket-friendly proportions. This gestural offering is full of supple curves, the forward-urging bowl offering a substantial feel in hand with its robustness and garnering much of the design's visual attention. The gently sweeping gesture of the shank plays a large role in emphasizing the bowl's prominence, creating cheeking around the transition while giving the bowl its lifted heel. The slightly elongated shank is particularly remarkable as it appears to be fairly standard when viewed in profile, but from above, its compressed nature is fully revealed. A crisp ridgeline emerges from the shank face, traveling along the underside before seamlessly blending with the bowl's base, adding even more texture.
The sandblasted finish makes the bowl even more enticing and irresistible in hand, coaxing out an impressive array of undulating grain all around the chubby bowl. The stummel's earthy-toned contrast stain showcases the nuances of the briar's grain with its mix of rust red and ink hues. The smooth, subtly chamfered rim provides a subdued hint of textural contrast, while even more rippling grain radiates along the shank's sides. It's a gorgeous piece that demonstrates Vladimir's skillful shaping and expert finishing techniques.- Jeffery Sitts
