Grechukhin: Smooth Bent Apple with Ivorite Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-497-0283
Based in St. Petersburg, Russia, Vladimir Grechukhin's shaping style is often marked by plump curves, compact dimensions, and rotund muscularity — such a signature aesthetic having become known as the St. Petersburg design style. Grechukhin has also mentored a number of other artisan pipe makers in the St. Petersburg area, and similar design cues are shared across their portfolios, further propagating the tradition. This bent Apple does well to showcase Grechukhin's iconic shaping style, its disposition varying depending on the vantage point from which it's observed. In profile, the form reveals a stout nature: The bowl is wonderfully curvaceous and the tall shank mirrors that rotundness, meeting the lower bowl at a defined transition that emphasizes the bowl's round, cheeking flanks. Furthermore, the underside of the shank extends noticeably further through the heel, and this aspect is accentuated by a svelte panel defining the shank's underside. When viewed from above, however, the shank exhibits a much more slender demeanor, the sides pinched in a manner that draws focus to the muscular bowl. Concise striations of vertical grain commend the bowl and sides of the shank, and a trim band of Ivorite along the stem base adds an aura of refinement, its slender width contrasting the stummel's robustness and making the shape come across quite svelte. All dressed in a rich, mahogany stain, it measure under five inches in length, offering comfortable balance and easy portability.-Truett Smith
