Grechukhin: Smooth Bent Apple with Nickel Silver
Product Number: 002-497-0285
Vladimir Grechukhin's Apple renditions are always remarkable and readily recognizable as the Russian artisan's work, whether they feature an elongated, gradually flaring shank or are of the more compact, chubby variety. This particular interpretation is an affably plump, stout-shanked rendition rendered in Nosewarmer length, measuring just over four-and-a-half inches long while still offering a hearty bowl and a respectably deep chamber. As for the shaping, it's very much in line with the Russian carver's other Apple renditions, exuding a Danish-like suppleness as the bowl's bulging flanks gradually taper upwards to the softly chamfered rim.
The tight-knit transition and shank, then, maintain the bowl's robustness, resulting in a short piece that provides a substantial presence in hand. The grain is always impressive on Grechukhin's pipes and this piece absolutely delivers with a stunning array of flame grain engulfing the bowl's flanks beneath the warm, rich contrast stain applied to the stummel. The shank is accented by a flashy mount of nickel silver, with the shank end subtly rounded to contrast against the crisp-lined saddle portion of the stem — the only rigid line in the entire piece. Whether you're an admirer of Grechukhin's style, favor compact designs, or simply enjoy finely crafted artisan pipes, this is the kind of pipe that any collection could benefit from having.
