Grechukhin: Sandblasted Acorn with Ivorite
Product Number: 002-497-0295
Leading the St. Petersburg design school of pipe design with his unique aesthetic, Russian carver Vladimir Grechukhin has been fashioning pipes since the 1970s and has developed a very distinctive style. This organic Acorn shows many of the cues that define his work, with a plump, almost spherical bowl, a pinched transition, and a distinctive flare to its shank. Grechukhin has a penchant for compact pipes and does not disappoint here, presenting a gorgeous Nosewarmer design only four-and-a-quarter inches in length.
Diminutive in stature, it lacks nothing for style and finish, with a medium-depth dark sandblast bringing out rippling growth rings all around, while the rim and elements of the shank are left smooth and stained lighter for contrast. The shank flares to a broad face of craggy plateau, which the stem nestles into with a standard mortise-and-tenon arrangement concealed beneath a discrete dome of vulcanite, while a pale Ivorite band provides a striking contrast. The stem tapers quickly from the Ivorite accent, turning down just slightly as it reaches for a hand-shaped lip button that offers a comfortable smoke.- Joel Balyeat
