Grechukhin: Sandblasted Bent Apple with Ivorite
Product Number: 002-497-0297
Vladimir Grechukhin is a much-admired Russian carver, so much so that his particular pipe-making aesthetic of muscular, compact designs is called the St. Petersburg design style. This forward-urging bent Apple is a fine example of that shaping aesthetic, its bulbous, organic bowl expanding into a softly rounded rim and high waistline that's rather Acorn-like.
The lifting heel of this pocket-friendly piece sweeps through the shank's undercurve as it rises gradually toward the abbreviated saddle stem and is marked by a crisp, framing ridgeline on the left. The right side of the shank remains curved for a playful, half-lenticular design. The stummel is dressed in a dark-ruby sandblast, highlighting the briar's natural growth rings, while a trim ring of Ivorite at the shank end both lightens the composition and lends further organicism. A compact, robust design, this piece is stunning and is sure to be the centerpiece of a discerning collector's rotation.-Angela Robertson
