Henri Sorensen: Smooth Acorn with Cocobolo Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-784-0048
Originally a glazier, Danish artisan Henri Sørensen primarily takes inspiration from his country's great artisans, with many of his pipes reflecting a skill for fine facets and timeless aesthetics. This Acorn is a hearty, Nosewarmer-proportioned take on the shape that measures in at less than four and a half inches long, making it eminently portable, though its impressive heft makes it a substantial piece that's impossible to ignore in hand. Despite its reserved length, there's still a good deal of dynamic curvature present across this pipe, especially through the shank and stem, though also at the fore wall of the bowl. Said bowl stands on a firm, pronounced heel that's spur-like in profile, with the heel acting as the extreme edge of a wrapping ridgeline that starts at one side of the stem, curves around the lower portion of the stummel, and terminates at the other end of the stem. This ridge introduces a significant amount of firmness to the pipe's silhouette, which contrasts nicely with the domed top portion of the shank and the bowl's own plumpness. Paired to the shank is a short, thick, half-saddle stem made of black vulcanite, a smart downturn at the bit working with the shank's slight lift to offer a comfortable smoking posture. At the base of this stem, Sørensen has accented the pipe with a broad fitment of cocobolo wood, creating some rich contrast and drawing a bit of visual weight away from the bowl. Said bowl's fore wall boasts a sweeping curve from the heel to the rim, and this bold curvature works with the shank and stem's own arc to manifest a lively, charming character that keeps the eye engaged. There's an added bit of soft, supple shaping at the rim, its edge taking on a neat chamfer into the capacious chamber, where the bowl's thick walls should provide plenty of insulation. Dressed in a vibrant, auburn-hued stain, the stummel displays dense streaks of flame grain wrapping around the bowl, leading the eye to the rim's vast dome of birdseye.
