Jacono: Rook Bent Apple with Silver (EE)
Product Number: 002-616-1023
Tonino Jacono began making pipes in 1981, and to this day works in a small home-based shop with simple tools. His two goals of pipe-making have always been to create fine smoking instruments, and to offer them at affordable prices. This hearty bent Apple is an excellent example of that ethos, offering a palm-filling bowl with stunning straight grain rising toward the rim. In the kind of neoclassic style I expect from an Italian artisan, the physical and visual weight is on the light stain and smooth finish of the stummel. However, an elegant, cream-hued acrylic stem with a silver accent band does well to further elevate the piece. Tonino grades his pipes according to the value of chess pieces, this pipe earning his third-highest "Rook" stamp reserved for smooth finishes, and further commended by two "E" stamps to show it is well on its way to being granted the grade of Queen. It's a handsome pipe from a talented and dedicated artisan, and yet, in keeping with Tonino's wishes, surprisingly affordable.- Joel Balyeat
