Italian pipe makers often dramatize proportions when fashioning classic shapes, creating stylized renditions of traditional English designs. Such cues are on display in this Rhodesian from Tonino Jacono: The bowl itself is quite robust, with a wealth of muscularity lent to its walls and a striking flare before its taper to the rim, but the shank and stem showcase a drastic taper from the transition, thrusting visual weight further toward the bowl. Presented here in the Stalemate series, this piece is fashioned from hornbeam, a hardwood with a dense composition likened to that of horn — hence influencing its name. It's offered here in a crisp rustication and jet-black stain to draw contrast to the cumberland-hued acrylic stem.
