Jerry Zenn: Smooth Rhodesian with Bamboo

Product Number: 002-788-0023

Similar in style to a previous Rhodesian we've received from Jerry Zenn, this rendition is easily recognizable as the work of the Taiwanese carver due to its shaping and bamboo accent work. The use of bamboo isn't exactly a modern feature in pipemaking as it was originally utilized in pipe designs when briar was scarce during shortages. However, Sixten Ivarsson notably used the organic material as more than a simple replacement for briar, incorporating bamboo to inform a pipe's overall composition. Since then, artisans have expounded upon that idea. From the wild, craggy pieces seen on examples from Roman Kovalev of Doctor's Pipes to trim, flowing pieces often seen in Japanese pipe design, bamboo has been a versatile aspect in the creations of many artisans. Here Zenn uses it seamlessly as both an aesthetic accent and a way to guide the viewer's eye to the broad Rhodesian bowl up front. In terms of texture, it's not as craggy or rugged as some of Jerry's other pieces, but the bumpy nodes along the shank end add some visual and tactile diversity to the composition. The careful attention paid to the nodes also should be noted, as here Zenn has shaped the stem base in such a way that it lines up perfectly with the bumpy texture, and he partially stained all of the nodes to effortlessly blend into the stem junction. The curling nature of the bamboo gradually leads into the Rhodesian bowl, defined by a strong taper from the rim to its low-set beadlines. The broad bowl takes advantage of all that extra canvas to display some swirling birdseye above the beadlines and streaks of lively flame grain below. While variants of this shape are featured within Zenn's portfolio, it's the unique touches and subtleties he includes in every piece that make each one individualistic and alluring for collectors.
