John He: Smooth Long Shank Acorn
Product Number: 002-818-0006
John He has been greatly influenced by the Ivarssons and studied under Tokutomi, so this long-shanked Acorn rendition comes as no surprise. The Chinese carver riffs off of the Lars design, poising the bulbous bowl on the end of a lengthy shank and stem combination out back. It's a playful, organic form as the shank tapers and pinches toward the transition, lending the bowl an even more obvious, perched disposition. Continuing the organic motif, He has fashioned the forward canted bowl to align with the band of straight grain that wraps it. The left flank rises higher than the right, tilting the waistline and rim for a touch of asymmetry that bespeaks his tutelage under Toku. With further bands of straight grain across the shank and birdseye above and below, this is an exquisite piece, marked by elegant curves and a gorgeously understated walnut stain. It's lovely work from John that represents his fusion of Japanese and Danish styles combined with sublime shaping and an expert artistic eye.-Truett Smith
