Ichi Kitahara: Rusticated Bent Acorn

Product Number: 002-340-0114

At first glance I saw the relatively simple (for Ichi) form and overall trim proportioning, and thought 1960s Danish, maybe Sixten-inspired. Well, yes and no. While it is lean in style, and there's definitely the kind of liveliness you'll find in a lot of vintage 60s Stanwell or Kriswill shapes (many of the former designed by Sixten) there's also definitely a different sort of organic element. The particular elongation of the bowl's "reach", the stretching effect of the shank's progression from transition to flare: these all add to that. But over top it, the strongest element to my eye is the seamless form being covered with this particular dark, low-profile rustication. The effect is organic, but more in that fascinating alien manner you get at seeing some unusual species of coral (or the work of H.R. Geiger), than the more expected Fugu/Cetacean themes seen in pipes today.
