Ichi Kitahara: Smooth Acorn
Product Number: 002-340-0176
Compared to his gestural freehands like the Hornfish, this would seem to be a more conservative piece from Ichi Kitahara — essentially a very smoothed out, almost Danish take on the Acorn. That's not to say it's any less beautiful for that; in fact, more minimalist compositions like this are exactly where Ichi tends to showcase the more elegant details in his execution. Notice the little tweaks like the smooth, lifting gesture of the heel, the subtle flare of the shank as it approaches the canted stem base, the oblong shape of the rim itself, even the overall orientation of the bowl's waistline in relation to the composition's horizontal axis... all these subtle characteristics, though seemingly minute on their own, come together beautifully and seamlessly here — emphasizing the implied forward momentum of the bowl, the suppleness of its plump curves, and the sheer fluidity of the silhouette from end to end. Beautiful work from Ichi here.
