Lomma: Smooth Bent Billiard
Product Number: 002-596-0154
It's always the details that commend a pipe maker's work — the small things that obviously take substantial time but elevate a composition into realms of art, like this pocket-friendly bent Billiard from Lars Jonsson of Lomma pipes. Here we see the combination of gradual and abrupt flow of lines, with the underside gently curving under the heel and up the bowl, while the top of the transition submits more of a check-mark disposition. It isn't really abrupt, but the contrast of the upper and lower curvature of the pipe unite for a distinctive profile.
The shank is cylindrical and widens toward the stem, terminating in a shallow dome into which the stem connects. The rim, too, is softly domed, with the addition of chamfering on the inner ring. A light contrast stain assures the flawless quality of the briar, as if the grain itself doesn't already extol that characteristic. The cheeking of the bowl maintains the bowl shape from left and right, while the short saddle stem maintains a visually low profile for the attention to remain on the stummel of this remarkable, pocket-proportioned composition.- Chuck Stanion
