Lomma: Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 002-596-0155
A sweeping bent Dublin, this piece from Lars Jonsson of Sweden displays a broadly curving rim in almost Mushroom proportions, though no so overwhelming as that design element can be. The rim also hosts a wide palette for the display of fine birdseye grain, and the inner rim is chamfered for an additional angle and easy filling of the bowl. The transition from bowl to shank is gradual, helping the impression that the stummel is one piece rather than separate elements of bowl and shank. Interestingly, the end of the shank is cut at an angle and is flat. I'd expect a rounded shank end with this design, but Lars is ahead of me with a remarkable plug-like treatment of the push-in stem surrounded by birdseye. The saddle stem therefore does not reduce to the flat section, instead emerging from the shank in already flattened condition, which is visually surprising and engrossing. Again. Lars reveals his Danish carving roots, and one can see the influence of Tom Eltang and Former Nielsen in this work, though clearly the designer has modified the aesthetic to his own vision.- Chuck Stanion
