Lomma: Sandbalsted Bent Egg
Product Number: 002-596-0160
Combining the tapered roundness of an Egg with the squat plumpness of an Apple or Tomato, this design from Lars Jonsson of Lomma is indicative of the Swedish artisan's compact and often muscular design style. A prime example, this piece is under four inches in length, yet packs the substance of a pipe twice its size — the bulging flanks of the bowl supported by the shank's stout nature, and the whole stummel afforded more visual presence by the trim saddle stem. I also especially appreciate the angled orientation of the stem base that Jonsson opted for here which adds dynamism to the profile. A common design cue from Lars is how he often extends the underside of the shank into the heel, lending prominence to the bowl's flanks, defining the transition, and accentuating the plump "cheeks" of the lower bowl. An easily toted, comfortably clenched briar, this bent Egg is dressed in a reserved, low-profile sandblast, with the smooth-polished rim and pale accent ring around the shank end offering some tasteful contrast.-Truett Smith
