marTelo: Smooth Jatoba with Bamboo Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-694-0039
A relatively new design, I first saw this Jatobá shape when Gustavo first posted a picture of it on his social media in April of 2017. Since then, it's become readily recognized as "Martelo" throughout the pipemaking world, alongside the Brazilian carver's pencil-shanked offerings. Named after and inspired by the fruit pods of the jatobazeiro tree in Brazil (Hymenaea courbaril for all you dendrologists out there), the bowl of Cunha's Jatobá shape is quite tall and slender proportionally, featuring a Stack-like chamber within and rounded, tapering flanks from rim to heel. Each design differs slightly, and in this one's case, Gustavo has adorned the bowl with a subtle beadline just below the rim, as well as fashioned the shank from quite a gnarled ferrule of bamboo to emphasize the shape's already organic aesthetic. This is only the second one we've received from Gustavo, but based on how well it's already been received in the pipesmoking community, I have a feeling we're going to keep seeing the Jatobá, and quite often at that.
