Michail Kyriazanos: Sandblasted Lumberman
Product Number: 002-629-0134
When a classic shape like the Lumberman is executed by a skillful proponent of traditional shapes like Michail Kyriazanos, the result is special and distinct, like this sandblasted rendition. It maintains all the lines one expects from the shape, but with such elegance and seeming simplicity that it appears effortless, but the shaping of such a perfect shape is not easy. The oval shank rides low, emerging from the transition arrow straight while the bowl rises with subtle, traditional cant in wonderful adherence to expectations of curvature.
The rim is flat and sandblasted, maintaining textural consistency for the entire stummel. The sandblasted grain revealed is that of a particularly superior block of briar, and in this light stain, a block of briar that has revealed not only spectacular grain but flawlessness of surface, as any pinpricks of anything other than consistent exterior would be easily recognizable. The shank is long proportionally, though the pipe itself is just less than five and a half inches in overall length, and the cumberland stem provides excellent, harmonizing hues to resonate with that of the briar. The undercurve of the heel is also noteworthy in its elegant sweep of Goldilocks attitude: That is, it's not overbearing or excessively forward urging, nor does it curve too sharply. It's just right.- Chuck Stanion
